Space Oddity
Intersection and transcendence are the two words that come to mind when thinking about what inspired this piece.
At the very center is an ancient and sacred geometric symbol . . . Vesica Piscis. It is said that the symbol mathematically represents the intersection of two equal circles at the center point of each. In some spiritual circles, this symbol is thought to represent the intersection between the spiritual and the material worlds. Some believe the symbol represents where the soul transcends into the material realm through birth. Hence why you might think the shape of the Vesica Piscis resembles a woman’s vagina.
Yet, it is unclear what perspective to take as this spaceman is accelerating at breakneck speeds into hyperspace. Perhaps moving from the material to the spiritual . . . perhaps the opposite? I think this piece is reflective at some level that humanity has and will continue to reach for the stars as a way to understand our world, our nature, higher powers or states of being, and the connection among these notions. The challenge has been in reconciling science and faith in a way that can bring them in harmony. Are we up for that task . . . The spaceman certainly is.
