Surviving on Defiance
This work was borne out my admiration for so many amazing women in the arts that inspire so countless people. As this idea developed, I felt immense joy celebrating women that have reached such great heights, but also recognize the norms they had to ignore, push past and shatter to achieve their dreams in a world that met them with resistance at so many turns.
I cannot even being to fathom the barriers that Frida Kahlo, Michelle Yeoh, Madonna and Maya Angelou faced or how they had the fortitude to overcome those hardships to bring such beauty into the world. In many ways, I imagine they were surviving on defiance of the status quo and the oppression women have faced and continue to face.
Despite the contributions of so many strong women over time to break glass ceilings, I wanted this piece to represent the continued struggle by capturing the colors of the Woman’s Suffrage movement. Yet, while challenges persist, I hope this art is a reminder that flowers may still bloom for you amidst the pain you feel.
